Journal #1: Charlotte Hornets vs Minnesota Timberwolves (November 26, 2021)

Inside spectrum center after the Charlotte Hornets defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 133-115

Since the entire NBA shut down due to COVID-19 in March of 2020 I had not been to a Hornets game, which is rare for me since I typically buy a nose bleed seats to a few games each year. Tickets for Hornets games have always been relatively cheap. I'm talking me and five of my buddies used to go to games for $20 total, but since the arrival of LaMelo Ball those $3-$5 tickets are now a thing of the past. The cheapest I could find for this particular game, which mind you was on a weekend, were $15 a pop before Ticketmaster transaction fees. 

One thing that has changed in the last two years is that the Hornets are relevant and tonight's crowd proved that. Lines to get in the building were long and nearly every seat had a butt in them. It was awesome to see the Spectrum Center filled up like we were back in the 2016 Playoffs playing against the Miami Heat.

Tonight's game was Kelly Oubre's game. With all the hype surrounding Melo and Miles Bridges, Oubre was not who I thought was going to have a statement game. There came a point where my dad and I thought "This has to be the Hornet's record for threes made in a game". Newsflash: It wasn't. 10 is the record held by Kemba Walker (3/22/18), Davonte' Graham (12/4/2019), and most recently Terry Rozier (12/23/20). Oubre had 7 threes made and this is the second time this season he has done so. The last time coming just 16 days before in the Hornets 118-108 win against the Memphis Grizzlies. Needless to say, Lowes (who sponsors every Hornets 3 pointer) got their moneys worth tonight. 

Another major takeaway from tonight's game is that LaMelo is still young and has to build his confidence on the court. He could be a shoot first guard but seems to be hesitant in shooting that three or driving in the paint. This does not hurt the team because LaMelo is a very smart player and helps others make plays through him but his stat sheet would look a lot better if he had enough confidence to shoot and drive when we know he could. 

The last thing I will touch up on is this. There came a point in tonight's ballgame where I took a second and realized that this was my first Hornets game in nearly 7 years that I did not have to look at Nic Batum's face and cringe knowing that my team was paying him $35m a year. It was nice. Like a fresh breath of air after chillin' in Hong Kong for too long. 

The Hornets now sit at #4 in the East and look like a team that could contend for that top spot if the Nets don't get their crap together. For once, I am very excited for the future of Charlotte Basketball. This is the basketball state and is the team owned by the GOAT. There is no reason the Hornets should not be a relevant team.
