This weekend NASCAR fans will get a good preview of what the championship race will look like as they had to Phoenix. But, as I am sitting here, thinking about how the season will transpire over the next few months, a thought popped into my head that I can’t shake. The NASCAR cup series championship in Phoenix does not make a lot of sense to me. Everybody knows about the stories of drivers running moonshine across state lines in the deep south, which eventually led to a full fledge sport that we know today as NASCAR. My first issue with the Championship race held in Phoenix is I think the championship race should be held somewhere in the south and not somewhere in the southwest. I understand that the market might be there for a race of such high caliber, but seriously the championship race needs to be somewhere in the south.
The other issue with the championship race being in Phoenix is that Phoenix is a unique track. It is not a complete oval, and it is only a mile long, and a half mile races on oval tracks are the bread-and-butter of NASCAR. Therefore the championship race, I feel, should be on a one and a half mile track somewhere in the south. So what is my suggestion? The race to determine the champion should be held in Charlotte every year. That makes the most sense to me because for starters, it is an oval track. Second, it is a mile long. And finally, the biggest reason it should be held at Charlotte Moror Speedway, every single cup series team is headquartered within an hour of the speedway. I know this will never happen because the location already hosts two races in the season. The Coca-Cola 600, and the Rovel at Charlotte. Because of the construction of the Roval, I know that hosting a championship race here is now not even a consideration for NASCAR. I just think that the organization should have thought this one through before dumping millions of dollars into the reconstruction. Again Phoenix just does not make a lot of sense to me. NASCAR is deeply rooted within the hills of the Carolinas and it just seems like an appropriate place to host the championship race. So yeah, Phoenix hosting the championship race doesn't make a lot of sense to me. NASCAR is deeply rooted within the hills of the Carolinas. There is a reason every team is based out of the state. My other suggestion is to have a ten-lap race around 485 (The interstate around Charlotte). I've been saying that since I was a kid. But that's a story for another time.
