Tomorrow, the first college football games of the 2023 season will be played, which means that it is also that time of year that Texas fans are back on their b***s***. Year after year, you can always bet on the fans down in Austin to proclaim to the entirety of the NCAA fanbase that "this is our year," when year after year, it never is.
While a good college football team that has consistently had national championship potential, Texas can never get the job done for some reason. While Texas fans are shouting from the rooftops that they will win a national title this year, they seem to forget that they always struggle to put on a solid winning streak against their biggest rival, the Oklahoma Sooners. Since the turn of the century, Texas has only beaten the Sooners two times in a row twice, and they are 8-16 against the Sooners since the 2000 season. With Texas and Oklahoma moving to the SEC, Texas has been creating buzz around their matchup against Alabama this season, and reasonably so. Two blue-chip college football teams playing in what will inevitably be one of the more exciting games of this season. Their athletic department is attempting to make Texas vs. Alabama THE rivalry in the SEC for years to come. Now, as I've mentioned before, Texas can't even beat the Oklahoma Sooners consistently. Where does that athletic department get off thinking they can rival Alabama? This is perhaps one of the dumbest moves I have seen come out of Texas, and they've made a lot of dumb moves. I know what it is they're trying to do. They're tyring to compete with Alabama for recruits. This new era of NIL has put Texas in a much better spot than before NIL was allowed, but it has yet to make the Longhorns that much better as a program. They're doing good to get eight wins in a season. If they can pull off beating Alabama consistently, they can become one of the scariest teams in Division I. But they have to be able to beat Alabama consistently. What I think Texas fails to realize is that no matter how much money you throw at some of the biggest prospects in the transfer portal and coming out of high school, you still have to develop these players and have a coach smart enough to make the right calls concerning the depth chart, playbook, and all the other factors that go into being a good coach. They will end up looking stupid for attempting to make this rivalry a thing. Texas is the state to go to if you want to play football. There's no doubt about it. But having the best recruits, the most money, and the most support does not guarantee that you will be a National Championship winning team. There's a reason the Longhorns have won ten games in just one season since 2010. The Texas football program and fanbase think they're entitled to a national championship. They deserve to win every game. Teams are scared when they go to play Texas. That's simply not the case. You're entitled to nothing. Money doesn't buy titles. The best recruits don't win titles. Though all those factors help, when you have a team full of athletes who care more about a check than they do about winning, you won't find yourself in a National Championship. Boomer Sooner!
