“I love NASCAR, it’s my kind of race” are some of the great lyrics from comedian musician Cleetus T. Judd.
I would say this has been me for my entire life, I love NASCAR. But spending this past weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, I left the track Sunday night the most disappointed I have ever been in my entire life from a NASCAR sanctioned event. And spending memorial day weekend annually at CMS has always been something I’ve eagerly looked forward to. every. Single. Year. And not that the weekend, with all the fellowship, parties, Alcohol, food, and other things was not amazing. But the result of a very stupid final decision of NASCAR left a very nasty taste in my mouth. Luckily, my life is very integrated with the Sport, the teams, and the drivers. So to say I would never go to another race would be a lie. But I could see plenty of people not returning to CMS or any other track as a result of a multitude of things. People spent hard earned dollars to Watch the longest race in Nascar, yet left not seeing a race longer than Kansas or the spring race in Darlington. Plenty of people came to see Kyle Larson run the second leg of the double, though weather in Indianapolis hindered him from starting the race. But the decision NASCAR made to call the race early, did not allow fans to even see Larson run a single lap. NASCAR promoted this entire “Double” Larson was running, yet blue balled the entire fanbase. And Yes, I know the rain was bad for 30 minutes or so, And that they lost the track. But to tell Fans in the crowd that the race would resume, to immediately go and dry pit road first and not the racing surface itself, to have had over 3 quarter of your fleet of Jet Dryers and Air titans at a competing race track, and to lie and say the track was still “Wet.” Nascar lied and deceived their fanbase. All the excitement, and grandeur they have built over the past few months has been completely shattered in a mere hour. They claimed the track was wet and the humidity was to high to dry the track, that they wouldn’t have it dry until 1 A.M I walked on the concourse, that itself was dry, I walked outside the racetrack on the road and sidewalks, they were dry, I drove back home after the race on highway 29 where the track is located, It was dry. And those did not have jet dryers and air titans rolling around them. The boo’s from the fans were loud, I don’t know if TV showed much of that, and people were livid. I think NASCAR will take a huge hit in less ticket sales, and viewership. At least from those in attendance. And for me personally, who spends thousands of dollars a year on all things NASCAR, I think it’ll be a while before I give SMI and NASCAR more of my money. My take is probably very biased at this point, and maybe at a later time I will be less upset by it. But just a few years ago we finished a race at daytona at 2 A.M that was over halfway complete and the same thing happened at Charlotte a decade ago. I don’t want to hear the “We WeRe oVeR tHe HaLfwAy” excuse.
