I've lived in the Charlotte area my entire life minus the last four years that I was away at college. Charlotte is a small to mid-sized market as far as professional sports teams are concerned, and our sport's history is not as decorated as cities like Boston or LA. Being from a smaller market does have its pros. Though it would be nice to see the Panthers or the Hornets win a Super Bowl or an NBA Title every once in a while, we take what we can get, but that's what makes it so special.
Of course, being that I was born in 1999 I have only experienced a handful of significant sports moments in Charlotte. My own personal favorite memory was the rebranding from the Bobcats back to the Hornets. Though I was only 3 whenever the original Hornets moved to New Orleans and all I ever knew was the Bobcats, I remember being so excited to have the team name changed back. There's something about that teal and purple that just belongs in Buzz City.
Of course there was the Panthers' trip to Super Bowl 50. As mentioned before, Charlotte teams have never one a major title, so it is exciting to even just make it that far. For teams like New England winning a Super Bowl is just another year. Seasons that result in a Super Bowl win just are not talked about like they are in Charlotte. The Panthers just made the Super Bowl, they did not even win it, but it is still talked about. Does anybody even still talk about the Patriots' last Super Bowl win?
Of course, these are just a couple moments that I can remember. I'm curious to know, especially from readers who remember the 80's and so on, what is your favorite Charlotte Sports Moment? Answer in the text box below and we will post the results next week!
