Can Denny Hamlin Save NASCAR?

This past Monday, in Denny Hamlin's podcast, Actions Detrimental, he proposed a new idea for a mid-season single-elimination tournament in the NASCAR Cup Series to help bring more attention and excitement to the sport. Instead of trying to explain this idea, here is what Hamlin had to say: ​

"We are going to have a bracket challenge. You have 10 weeks to get yourself in the top 32 in points. Five weeks in a row where you have head-to-head competition, and you're seeded based off where you are in points at week 10.

So the number 1 seed is whoever is first in points, they will be going up against the 32nd place guy in points this week, so on, so forth.
You're gonna have head to heads, once again, 16 down to 8, down to 4, down to 2. I can tell you, as the drivers are concerned, we would be wildly competitive for this."

Personally, I'm here for it! Growing up a mile away from Charlotte Motor Speedway, I'd love nothing more than to see NASCAR have the backing it used to. People would be camping all across the county just for the race. Businesses could open up that one weekend and then close for the rest of the year if they wanted. Growing up in that environment was awesome, but there isn't enough backing for the sport right now for that environment to return. 

Today, what used to be a campground where thousands of fans used to camp for race week is a literal landfill because, economically, it's better use of the land. I'm not entirely sure where the backing for NASCAR was lost, but when NASCAR is doing good, it's great for the towns the races are in!
