I was wrong, and I'm glad I was. I thought for sure Leaky was on his way out of Carolina, but thanks to COVID-19, we get another year of Leaky! This past season, the Cox Mill Alumni has played a pivotal role for the Tar Heels, especially on defense. While his statistics show low numbers, there is a reason he was on the ACC All-Defensive Team.
His announcement came from a video where he read a note he wrote to himself. This is a phenomenal move for Leaky. As I mentioned in a previous article, journal entry, whatever you want to call it, regardless of whether he came back for a fifth year, his career playing basketball would not stop at the University of North Carolina. Bacot has announced he will be coming back. RJ Davis isn't going anywhere. The Status of Caleb Love is still pending. With Leaky coming back, I'd like to think Love would stay for at least another year unless an NBA team were interested in taking him in the first round. That's a total of four starters from this past season coming back. The young men sitting behind them will have to wait another year. The 2022-'23 Tar Heels may be one of the most dangerous Carolina teams since Ty Lawson, Tyler Hansbrough, and Danny Green won the Heels a title back in 2009. The stakes are high, and how could the team regress? This seasoned Tar Heels team is bound to be a favorite to win the title, and you know these young men want to get back and get themselves a ring. Carolina will be the team to watch. As mentioned before, I believe Leaky's playing days will not end at Carolina. He's never shown up on any mock draft, but as a defensive powerhouse that can only get better, everything is on the line this season. Leaky will be 23 this season, so it will be difficult for a team to want him in the draft, but it's possible. Davis, Love, and Bacot will run the offense, so the defense will once again have to be where Leaky shines. The ACC Defensive Player of the year has to be his focus. I'm excited, like, really excited for this season. I haven't been this excited for Carolina Basketball since the 2009 National Title. Leaky is my favorite player so for him to come back is huge. We are lucky our core four (assuming Love stays) will remain intact. Most teams these days are not so lucky. As always, GO HEELS!!!
